The Maltese are renowned for their warm hospitality and hard work. Workers are conscientious while wages are reasonable when compared to other European countries. Education and training standards are good, English is widely spoken and most business communication is done in English. Italian is also widely spoken. Malta boasts of high education and training levels with the local of the labour force becoming a key competitive factor. Over 60 per cent of Maltese students remain in education to tertiary level following academic or vocational courses. The University of Malta enjoys excellent reputation worldwide and around 25 per cent of students at the University of Malta are enrolled in courses relevant to careers in the financial services sector. Law, management, communications and medicine are the dominant courses read at the university. Malta’s relatively low ancillary labour costs, outstanding work ethic and highly-motivated workforce make the country an attractive cost-effective location. Salaries in the country are ranked as the second lowest in the European Union.
